I’m often fascinated by responses to sexuality within Japanese culture, and the work of Kohei Yoshiyuki is no exception. His photography of voyeurism in Tokyo parks during the 70s documents a group experience that though shared, is covert and silent. Using a 35mm camera and early infrared technology, the artist infiltrated the world of peeping toms who gathered to watch the sexual exploits of couples in this public space. The voyeurs would begin at a distance and then slowly approaching the couple for a close up view, at times even reaching out to touch. His resulting photo series is The Park (1970–1979).

Ms Trash

Miss Trash was another lovely interview subject who was very open with me about various sexual conquests in her private life. She also works as a stripper. When I wanted her to speak about that, but was having trouble coming up with a specific question, she had an issue fresh on her mind and was happy to have the interview as a forum for a mini rant.

It seems that her mates, or acquaintances within her circle of friends, have been introducing her as “The Stripper.” Jerks. I mean, that’s really great that she can be open with her friends about what she does, and that there’s no shame in that. But, if you are being introduced as what you do, rather than your name, it’s fair enough to be little pissed at that. Plus because of her title as stripper, even with friends of friends, these people are hearing what she does and making assumptions about who she is, what she’s into and how she wants or deserves to be treated. Not cool. To make assumptions that strippers are highly sexual, promiscuous or into kink is misguided. Miss Trash has a punk style of dress. Apparently she was wearing a dog collar at the time, so on top of the uncool introduction, the guy she was meeting yelled “Oh so you’re the stripper,” grabbed her by the collar and told her how he’d tie her up by it, how she’d like that and what else he’d do to her. Not exactly appropriate and respectful conversation for a first meeting.

Learn from this folks, strippers are people too.

Oh and don’t assume that dog collars, punk clothes and tattoos make a dominatrix. This lady is a self professed sub.

Speaking of which, I’ll share one of her stories of submission because it’s relevant to something I’ve thought about a bit lately. She used to self harm by choking, so when a sex-partner wanted to try it she was worried what it would trigger. But now that she’s in a happier place, she went ahead and worked past the negativity of that act. So that’s pretty cool that choking can now be something that arouses her, that she can fully enjoy as submissive and a shared, perhaps bonding, experience with someone special to her. It’s interesting how D/S play can in some cases be helpful or therapeutic to people in relation to past negative experiences. Or how our minds can work to turn unpleasant experiences into kinks.

This very personal piece by Mac McClelland is a very insightful related read. The author tells of her experience reporting in Haiti and the post traumatic stress she experienced as a result. She came to understand that one way she could confront this was to engage in violent sex. A rape scene to be exact.

Under the circumstances, violent sex wasn’t a matter of recreation for me. It was a way, one way, to help get better.

The article was met with much controversy, but as an account of what worked for one person, it is certainly thought provoking. Rape scenes and BDSM, when practised consensually can of course come purely from fantasy and not negative past experiences.

In other news, Miss Trash, along with a bunch of alternative looking girls, is working on making a site promoting stripping services. If you are in Australia, check it out, the site should be fully up and running by November.
